You might be wondering, what counts as eco-therapy? Simply put, it’s a range of activities that connect you with nature to improve your health. These activities encourage mindfulness, physical movement, and a sense of belonging to the earth. The best part? You don’t need to be an expert hiker or a wilderness guru to enjoy them.

Top US Eco-Therapy Activities to Try Today

Ready to get started? Here are some of my favorite eco-therapy adventures in the US that you can easily incorporate into your wellness routine.

1. Forest Bathing in the Pacific Northwest

Imagine walking through towering Douglas firs and Western red cedars, the air rich with pine and earth. The Pacific Northwest is a forest lover’s paradise. Places like Olympic National Park in Washington or the Hoh Rainforest offer perfect spots for forest bathing. Take slow, deliberate steps. Listen to the rustling leaves and bird songs. Let your senses awaken.

2. Desert Meditation in Arizona

The Sonoran Desert’s vast landscapes and unique cacti create a serene backdrop for meditation. Early mornings or late afternoons are ideal for sitting quietly and soaking in the warm hues of the desert. The silence here is profound, making it easier to find inner peace.

3. Coastal Walks in Maine

The rugged coastline of Maine offers breathtaking views and fresh ocean air. Walking along the rocky shores or sandy beaches, you can feel the stress melt away. Try to spot seals or seabirds as you stroll. The rhythmic sound of waves is nature’s own lullaby.

4. River Therapy in the Appalachian Mountains

The Appalachian region is dotted with gentle rivers and streams perfect for water therapy. Dip your feet in cool water, listen to the babbling brook, or even try kayaking for a more active experience. The soothing presence of flowing water can calm your mind and refresh your spirit.

5. Community Gardening in Urban Areas

Don’t have access to wild nature? No problem! Many cities across the US have community gardens where you can plant, nurture, and harvest your own vegetables and flowers. This hands-on connection with the earth is incredibly grounding and rewarding.
